Spring Arbor University: Getting Started with 1Password

1Password is a secure password manager that helps you store, organize, and access your login credentials for Spring Arbor University services and personal accounts. It makes online life easier and safer by eliminating the need to remember multiple passwords. Spring Arbor University provides 1password to some staff and faculty members that have higher risk associated with their accounts, or that need to manage passwords in many systems outside of SAU. We do not provide 1password access to everyone, but if you think you could benefit from access please reach out!

What are Passwords and Secret Keys?

  • Password: This is your primary login password for 1Password.
  • Secret Key: This is a randomly generated, high-strength code unique to your account. It adds an extra layer of security. Both the password and secret key are required to access your 1Password data.
  • 1Password does not use your SAU username and password and it requires a password with a minimum of 16 digits unlike your SAU account.

Why Use Both?

Using both a password and a secret key provides two-factor authentication (2FA), significantly boosting your account security. Even if someone steals your password, they can't access your data without the secret key. Even if 1password loses your data it is still protected by the secret key and your password.

Accessing Common Settings

You can access your common 1Password settings through the web interface or the desktop app. These settings include:

  • Changing your password: Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select "Security" > "Change Password.
  • Managing devices: Go to "My Devices" to see a list of devices where you're logged in and revoke access if needed.

Setting Up 1Password on Multiple Devices

  1. Download the 1Password app for each device (desktop, mobile, etc.).
  2. Launch the app and choose "Sign in with your 1Password account."
  3. Enter your 1Password password and Secret Key.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Recovering Your Secret Key

Unfortunately, 1Password cannot retrieve your original Secret Key. However, you can view and download a new one by following these steps:

  1. Log in to 1Password on a trusted device where you remember your password and have logged in before.
  2. Go to your profile picture > "Security" > "Secret Key."
  3. Click "Show My Secret Key."
  4. Copy and save the key securely (e.g., print it out and store it in a safe place).

Losing Your Password or Secret Key

If you lose both your password and Secret Key, don't worry! We can help you regain access to your data. Please contact the Spring Arbor University IT Help Desk for assistance. However, resetting your password will generate a new Secret Key as well. This means you'll need to set up 1Password again on all your devices.
