Connect to CARS Remotely

Problem:
A user needs to access CARS remotely/off campus.



Solution:


Download PuTTy




Configure PuTTy

  1. Session
    1. Host name = cars.arbor.edu:22
    2. Connection type = SSH
    3. Saved Sessions = CARS
  2. Terminal
    1. Keyboard
      1. The backspace key = Control-H
      2. The home and end keys = rxvt
      3. The function keys and keypad = VT100+
      4. Initial state of cursor keys = Normal
      5. Initial state of numeric keypad = Normal
      6. Enable extra keyboard features = Controll-Alt is different from AltGr
  3. Window
    1. Rows = 25
    2. Columns = 80
    3. Lines of scrollback = 200
    4. When window is resized = Change the number of rows and columns
    5. Control the scrollback in the window
      1. Display Scrollbar
      2. Reset scrollback on display activity
      3. Push erased text into scrollback
  4. Connection
    1. Data
      1. Auto-login username = network username
      2. Terminal-type string = vt100-mm
      3. Terminal speeds = 38400,38400
  5. Click Session again
  6. Click Save




Connect to the CARS database

  • Open PuTTy
  • Select CARS from Saved Sessions
  • Click Load
  • Click Open
  • At PuTTy Security Alert click Yes
  • Type user's password and press Enter

The user should see the CARS screen that they typically see when they are on campus.
 

  • To exit, type exit and hit Enter





Tips

  • User's will need to be connected to a high-speed Internet connection
  • Since the EXE does not require an installation, the user may want to save the EXE file to their desktop
