Rogue Wireless Access Point Policy

Body

Definition
A rogue access point is a wireless access point that is not operated by Spring Arbor University and is detrimental to the wireless coverage of others.

Policy
Spring Arbor University is committed to providing reliable wireless network in campus buildings. In order to maintain optimal wireless coverage for all members of the community, rogue access points are strictly prohibited in all campus buildings. If individuals feel that wireless coverage is inadequate, they should contact the Technology Services Help Desk.

Reasoning:

Security
Rogue access points can be used to run man-in-the-middle attacks and intercept traffic that connected clients are sending and receiving.

Interference
There are a limited number of channels available for wireless access points to use (see IEEE 802.11 for more information). In order to fully cover campus buildings, all of the available channels are used on campus. With the introduction of a new access points, existing access points will have their coverage substantially reduced due to the same-channel interference.
