5Ghz WiFi on a windows laptop

There are two frequency bands that WiFi can operate on, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. 2.4Ghz has a higher signal strength, but it is slow and prone to problems with interference. 5Ghz tends to have a weaker signal strength, but it is much faster and more stable. Most new mobile devices will choose to connect to the 5Ghz band if it is possible, but Windows laptops tend to choose 2.4Ghz if it has a stronger connection (even if it isn't as stable). If your window's laptop is capable of both bands, you can tell it to choose the faster band when it is possible.

  1. Right click on the WiFi icon on the bottom right of your screen
  2. Click Open Network and Sharing Center
  3. Click Change adapter settings
  4. Right click on the wireless setting
  5. Select your WiFi connection
  6. Click properties
  7. Click configure
  8. Click the advanced tab
  9. Click preferred band
  10. Under "Value" select "Prefer 5.2Ghz band
